MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID
Course Background:
Mental Health First Response Awareness training enables the learner to recognize general signs and symptoms of an individual/s whose mental health
may be of concern and to assist them. The learner will gain awareness of mental health disorders and how to support and
understand individuals who are going through a crisis. The learner will gain an understanding of signs that may be concerning
and when to seek professional help.
Course Content:
- Mental Health (Introduction)
- Skills & Abilities to recognise the signs and symptoms of mental health issues for e.g: depression
- Developing commiserative listening skills
- Improve productivity within the workplace
- Reduction in absenteeism
- Improvement in performance from individual/s
Course Outline
- Understanding mental health and why individual/s develop mental health conditions and the role of a Mental Health First
Aider
- Know how to provide advice and practical support for a person presenting a mental health condition
- Understanding and managing stress
- Understanding emerging mental health problems including depression, anxiety, psychosis and substance misuse
- How to offer and provide initial help, and how to guide a person towards appropriate treatments and other supportive
help.
Course Outcome
Mental Health First Response Awareness training has been shown to improve attitudes towards people with mental health difficulties, reduce
stigma, improve knowledge and improve people’s confidence in providing help and likelihood to advise people to seek
professional help.
